The perfect NEW candidate:

NEW’s Mission
Nontraditional Employment for Women is a competitive pre-apprenticeship training
program for women interested in pursuing a career in the building trades.

NEW requires that applicants meet the following criteria:
Females that are at least 18 years of age.
Must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
Willing and able to perform 8 hours of physical work.

Application Process
The first step for interested candidates is to sign up for an Information Session by calling NEW at 212-627-6252 or visiting our website at

At the General Information Session, women will learn more about NEW and our training program and take a standard TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) math and reading test.

Note: Candidates must score above a 7.0 (seventh grade level) in order to be called
for an interview. Candidates that do not score above a 7.0 will receive a call and will
be allowed to retest.

At the interview, NEW staff is looking for a woman that is high-energy, motivated and
looking for a career (not just a job).

Note: The applicant should be able to demonstrate her related skills (i.e. military
background, home renovations, outdoor work, etc.), explain her work history, and why she is interested in a career in construction.

Women will be scored on a point system and notified by mail whether or not they have been selected as a NEW candidate.
